Finca la Vigia, the Ernest Hemingway House Museum, is located in the picturesque district of San Francisco de Paula, just 24 kilometers from the lively historic center of Havana. Built in 1886 by Catalan architect Miguel Pascual Baguer, this house, with its charming architecture and magnificent views of Havana, became an integral part of the great writer's life and work. Hemingway himself lived in Finca la Vigia from mid-1939 to 1960, filling these walls with inspiration and history.
It was here, in the peace and tranquility of this cozy home, that Ernest Hemingway created his famous novel For Whom the Bell Tolls. The royalties from this book allowed him to purchase and furnish this beautiful estate. However, of no less importance for Hemingway's literary legacy is the fact that it was at Finca la Vigia in 1951 that he wrote his unrivaled masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea. The image of an old fisherman courageously fighting the elements is inspired by the story of Hemingway's friendship with Gregorio Fuentes (1897-2002), a fisherman from Cochimar who saved Hemingway from danger in 1926, beginning their long-lasting friendship. Legends are still told of their fishing trips together on the yacht “El Pilar”, which today is also an exhibit of the Finca la Vigia Museum, located on the estate and available for visitors to see.
Hemingway's home attracted not only inspiration, but also many notable personalities. Guests have included Hollywood stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Errol Flynn and Spencer Tracy, whose names are forever linked to this legendary place that preserves the spirit of the great writer and his unforgettable time.
