Following in the footsteps of a legend: Cuba on the Hemingway Trail
This tour will take you back to Cuba's golden age by following in the footsteps of one legend, Ernest Hemingway. He left his indelible mark on Liberty Island, and his favorite places still keep the spirit of the time alive.
Ambos Mundos Hotel
The five-story Hotel Ambos Mundos, which translates to “Two Worlds,” built in 1924 in an eclectic style, is located in Old Havana at an intersection of streets. This hotel is known as the place where Ernest Hemingway lived for seven years starting in 1932. Room 511 on the top floor was his first Cuban home, overlooking Havana and the harbor where he often fished on his yacht, El Pilar. Hemingway rented a modest room for $1.50 a day until he moved to the Finca Vigia house outside of town in 1939.

Today, Room 511, decorated in Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, has been preserved in pristine condition and is a mini-museum available to the public. The hotel lobby also houses a photography exhibit dedicated to Hemingway.

Hemingway House Museum in San Francisco de Paula - Finca la Vigia
Finca la Vigia, the Ernest Hemingway House Museum, is located in the picturesque district of San Francisco de Paula, just 24 kilometers from the lively historic center of Havana. Built in 1886 by Catalan architect Miguel Pascual Baguer, this house, with its charming architecture and magnificent views of Havana, became an integral part of the great writer's life and work. Hemingway himself lived in Finca la Vigia from mid-1939 to 1960, filling these walls with inspiration and history.

It was here, in the peace and tranquility of this cozy home, that Ernest Hemingway created his famous novel For Whom the Bell Tolls. The royalties from this book allowed him to purchase and furnish this beautiful estate. However, of no less importance for Hemingway's literary legacy is the fact that it was at Finca la Vigia in 1951 that he wrote his unrivaled masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea. The image of an old fisherman courageously fighting the elements is inspired by the story of Hemingway's friendship with Gregorio Fuentes (1897-2002), a fisherman from Cochimar who saved Hemingway from danger in 1926, beginning their long-lasting friendship. Legends are still told of their fishing trips together on the yacht “El Pilar”, which today is also an exhibit of the Finca la Vigia Museum, located on the estate and available for visitors to see.

Hemingway's home attracted not only inspiration, but also many notable personalities. Guests have included Hollywood stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Errol Flynn and Spencer Tracy, whose names are forever linked to this legendary place that preserves the spirit of the great writer and his unforgettable time.

La Bodeguita del Medio Restaurant
“La Bodeguita del Medio” is a must-visit place in Old Havana. This Havana restaurant with a rich history attracts tourists with its unique atmosphere and delicious Creole cuisine. The history of La Bodeguita del Medio began in 1942 as a small grocery store called La Bodeguita de Martínez, which sold drinks and snacks. Gradually it became a popular meeting place for intellectuals, which led to the expansion of the menu and the renaming to La Bodeguita del Medio. Over the years, countless celebrities have been its guests, from writers such as Ernest Hemingway to influential politicians.

Inside you'll find authentic Cuban flavor, live music and delicious traditional dishes. The walls of the restaurant are hung with autographs and memorabilia of famous visitors, including signatures of Salvador Allende, Pablo Neruda and, of course, Ernest Hemingway. This tradition began with the initiative of journalist Leandro Garcia, who left his autograph on the wall.

El Floridita Bar
"El Floridita" is a legendary Havana bar inextricably linked to the name of Ernest Hemingway. The bar, which has been around for over 200 years, is one of Cuba’s most famous landmarks. Hemingway’s name and "El Floridita" are inseparable: when mentioning one, it is impossible not to remember the other.

Hemingway first visited El Floridita in 1932, staying at the nearby Ambos Mundos Hotel. It all started with a daiquiri, which became the writer’s favorite drink. "My mojito at La Bodeguita, my daiquiri at El Floridita," goes the famous quote. For more than 20 years, Hemingway was a regular at the bar, where he spent time with friends — politicians, intellectuals and Hollywood stars including Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner and others.

Even after moving from the Hotel Ambos Mundos to the Finca Vigia, Hemingway regularly went to El Floridita for his favorite daiquiri. Legend has it that it was over a few daiquiris that the idea for the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls came to him. Daiquiris were not only a source of inspiration for him, but also a way to get through the hardships of life, as reflected in his words, "A smart man sometimes has to get drunk to spend time with idiots."

The last time Hemingway visited El Floridita was in 1960. This bar still keeps the memory of this legendary friendship alive. You can also still see his signature on the wall here.
